Every year we try to plant a garden. My wife likes exotics, but I try to stick to two or three staples. Usually that standard plantings are tomatoes and beets. Sometimes kale. Often times enough gords mixed in. Don’t use any chemicals, so tomato plants are leathery enough to endure a multitude of pests. Beets are like spinach. Their leaves can be ravaged by ‘white butterflies’, or what I call cabbage butterflies. However, the beet bulb/root remains. This year the pests were low, and the summer rather cool. I think we did as fine as we did because I went with numbers– planting almost 50 tomatoes along with a good six rows of beets. In order to help keep out animals, like cats, grew the tomatoes like a wall around the beets and gourds- that was the basic layout.
